Praying Mantises Wear Tiny 3D Glasses For Science

Posted on January 22 2016

Scientists are always trying to uncover answers to the unknown - like how do praying matises see. It has been thought the insects were able to see in 3D, but scientist Jenny Read wanted to put the theory to the test. Her method? Invent 3D glasses for the mantises to wear while watching a movie of simulated prey and study how they reacted. 3D vision allows for depth perception, and sure enough, as the prey got closer on-screen, the insects would strike out. Click here for a detailed account of the experiment and see why 3D vision for insects is considered very rare. Wanna look as cool as these praying mantises? Come pay us a visit anytime.
